THE
MOUNTAINEER
3 DAYS/ 2 NIGHTS
FOR ONLY CDN $ 395.00
Wells Gray Provincial Park is home to a number
of majestic mountain ranges. While the endless peaks of the Northern
Caribou Mountains encompass about two thirds of the park in the North,
it is bordered by the Spanish Mountain Range to the West and the Sushwap
Highlands to the East and South. This trip is based from the Wells Gray
Guest Ranch which is located at the most important trail heads leading
to stunningly beautiful alpine meadows and mountain peaks with
breathtaking sceneries.
| Day 1: We meet at the Ranch Office at 09.00
a.m. After signing in we meet the guide and get basic safety, packing
and gear instructions. Then we climb into our van and start the first
day. The trip takes us to the volcanic canyon of Spahats Falls and the
seemingly endless cascading Silver Tip Falls before we climb with our
vehicle up 12 km to the Trophy Mountain Trailhead. We hike first through
forest and then reach the famous Flower meadows which are bursting with
colors especially late June and July. After we rest at the old
Sheppard’s Cabin we continue on to Sheila Lake for Lunch. In the
afternoon we enjoy the scenic vistas from various lookouts in the open
alpine before we descend back down to our van for the drive home. Dinner
at the Black Horse Saloon and overnight in one of the bunkhouses. |
 |
| Day 2: Right across from the ranch gates is
the start of a road called the Battle Mountain Road. We will use a one
ton 4x4 crew cab to bounce up this very rocky trail for about 8
kilometers to the trailhead to both Battle Mountain and Table Mountain.
From there we hike up the Table Mountain Trail which has its name from
the flat peak, from where we will have a 360 degree view of an endless
ocean of mountain peaks around us. We will be able to see the Monashee
Mountain Range to the East and even spot the Rocky Mountains in the
distance. Then we descend an approx. 3,5 hour winding trail through the
forest back to the ranch, where we really feel like we deserve another
scrumptious buffet dinner. Overnight. in the bunkhouses. |
| Day 3: We use the same Battle Mountain Road
again this morning to start our trip up Battle Mountain. This Mountain
Range has its name from the old battles between the Cree and the
Chilcotin Indians over the huge Caribou herds. Sometimes, if you are
lucky, you still can find old arrow heads and other relicts of the old
days although it is more likely to see a small herd of Caribou which
call these mountains their home. We will pass Phillips Lake, cross
Caribou Meadows rest at the falls with the same name, then climb up
Fight Mountain and refresh on the shores of Fight Lake before we descend
another windy trail back home, where a shower and refreshments in the
Saloon will feel good before departure. If you don’t have to leave yet
and have the time, spend another night at the ranch in a bunkhouse or
ask if they have a room available to try out a real bed again. |
